We met with Dee Dee and Audio’s teachers tonight. We met with Dee Dee’s teacher first. He seems alright. He’s young and optimistic, which has nothing to do with his glasses. Audio’s teacher has collected a few years under her belt since Dee Dee was in her room and seemed the same, but better. Both of our girls were happy to meet with their teachers and look around their new classrooms.
Some people wore masks. Our family did not because we figured that no one else would. I found it interesting that Dee Dee’s teacher would go unmasked when meeting with families who were also unmasked. But, would put on a mask when meeting with families who wore masks. I am not a scientist, a doctor, an epidemiologist, or an HVAC technician. But I don’t think it is much help to put on a mask in a room that you’ve been in, unmasked, with others who are unmasked just to briefly speak with someone else who is masked. The teacher’s germs were already in the room. As were ours, and everyone else’s. But often, wearing a mask is as much for helping others feel comfortable as it is for helping them stay healthy.
Dee Dee and Audio had both expressed happiness and excitement about going to the school and seeing their classrooms and meeting with their teachers. But I was surprised that from the time we entered the building until we left, they didn’t touch the ground. Both of them left about a four-inch gap between their shoes and the floor the whole time, which is pretty impressive for Audio, who is considerably shorter than Dee Dee.
Seeing how happy your kid feels inside their school is a good indicator of how their life is going. Sometimes it can be difficult to know what it is like for kids at school. Luckily for us, we not only saw physical evidence in the form of our floating children. But, to add to that, the staff and teachers did a special song and dance routine for the girls! In the hallways and in the rooms, the teachers all worked the same steps and sang the same words. Some knew the material better than others. But, all of their hearts were in it. Teachers who’d had Dee Dee in the past greeted her with smiles, dance moves, and words that sent her floating up around the six-inch mark. And, everyone seemed attracted to Audio and her new, “pixie” haircut. It all felt a little awkward because my wife and I were firmly attached to the ground, walking and speaking the same way we always do.
